====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Alabama -- City Council to Vote on Daytime Curfew Tuesday Dear HSLDA Members and Friends in Mobile: According to its published agenda, the Mobile City Council will vote on the proposed daytime curfew at its regular meeting on Tuesday, August 30, at 10:30 a.m. Your calls and emails to council members are needed to defeat passage of this ordinance that restricts the liberties of law-abiding citizens. On August 4, approximately three weeks ago, Mayor Samuel L. Jones issued a memorandum to homeschooling parents telling them of revisions made to the proposed curfew ordinance for Mobile. Eliminated altogether was the definition of a "home-schooled minor" as a child who had been issued a certificate of exemption by the public school superintendent. The definition of "minor" was revised for purposes of the daytime curfew as a child who has not reached his or her 17th birthday, thereby aligning the language of the ordinance with state compulsory attendance law. Additionally, the proposed ordinance was amended to exclude minors who are enrolled in a church school or taught by a private tutor if they are in a public place with the permission of their parent or guardian. While all of the changes are favorable to homeschooling families, they do not warrant support for a daytime curfew such as is being proposed. If the proposed ordinance is passed, all minors may be stopped, questioned by police, and required to provide proof that they are not in violation of the ordinance. They may be picked up and transported to the Curfew Center. This type of treatment is abhorrent to a free society and the principles of liberty upon which our nation was founded. ACTION REQUESTED: 1.
