====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Alabama--HSLDA Seeks Mobile Curfew Details Dear HSLDA Members and Friends in Mobile: HSLDA is working hard to find out exactly what sort of curfew proposal is being drafted and how it would affect you. We called the office of Mobile Mayor Sam Jones and were told to talk to city attorney Larry Wettermark. When we called Wettermark, he refused to give us access to the draft ordinance until the mayor's office chooses to make it public--possibly at the coming July 19 City Council meeting. This is cause for concern. Not only is the mayor refusing to give us access to what is currently being drafted, but he has made conflicting statements which hint that it could be a daytime curfew. State law gives any citizen the right to inspect and copy public documents under certain circumstances. Today HSLDA is submitting a formal request for access to the current draft of the ordinance in an effort to bring greater transparency to this important issue. ACTION REQUESTED The next frontier for protecting your freedom may be the Mobile City Council. Take some time to educate yourself about how it works, and where and when it meets. Find out who the council member is for your district and how to contact him or her. BACKGROUND During an interview with a representative of Fox Ten News, Mayor Jones said about the curfew draft: "During the school days, the curfew ends, starts, when schools end, ends at the end of school for kids who are supposedly school age kids. They have a curfew. They have to actually be on the campus of the school--can't be wandering the street during that time. And the other thing is, after 11:00 at night then the regular curfew would apply to them also." Alabama's public records law is found in section 36-12-40 of the Code of Alabama. Mobile's current nighttime curfew is found beginning in section 39-261 of the Code of Ordinances. Thank you for standing with us for freedom! Sincerely, Dewitt T.
