Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Last night the Belleville Board of Aldermen unanimously adopted a cleaned-up truancy ordinance representing a concurrence between city officials and homeschool representatives (the June 29 draft). With the formal adoption of the ordinance, this chapter in the fight to protect liberty in Belleville comes to a close. The freedom of young people to move about during the daytime has been preserved thanks to the prompt and powerful response of homeschool families. A special word of thanks goes to J.C. Harrison and Tim Jones, who provided "boots on the ground" leadership for the homeschool community, and to Illinois Christian Home Educators, the state homeschool organization that made important contributions. ACTION REQUESTED Please send a word of thanks to the mayor, chief of police, and members of the Board of Aldermen. They listened to our concerns and made the changes we requested. BACKGROUND INFORMATION For a number of years, Belleville has had a truancy ordinance which is much stricter than state law. The ordinance adopted last night did little to change that. We recommend that you review the June 29 draft on our website to see changes to Belleville's nighttime curfew which may affect you. Thank you for standing with us for freedom!
