====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Illinois--Belleville Mayor Says Daytime Curfew Will Be Dropped Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: In a meeting yesterday with J.C. Harrison and Tim Jones, Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert agreed to drop the proposed daytime curfew. This is highly encouraging! On the other hand, the mayor indicated he would seek changes to the city's truancy ordinance. When we obtain a copy of the revisions, we will provide an analysis. ACTION REQUESTED Clear your calendar for July 5 at 7:00 p.m. so you are available to attend the Board of Aldermen meeting. We expect the ordinance to come up for a vote at that time. We need to remain vigilant. We have not yet seen a written copy of the newest proposed changes. BACKGROUND INFORMATION It is not uncommon for proposed ordinances to go through several revisions. If you would like to track the various proposals that have been discussed, the easiest strategy might be to identify them by date. The first proposal we alerted you about was dated June 7, 2011. After the recent large public meeting, a revision dated June 22 was submitted. These two versions are no longer current. We are waiting for an official copy of the next revision. The city's truancy ordinance (section 30-1-44) is currently stricter than state law in that it allows a penalty the very first time a Belleville student is absent from school for part of a day without valid cause.
