====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Illinois--Heads Up for Statewide Daytime Curfew-Truancy Craze Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Is your town or county considering an ordinance making it a crime for a young person to move about during the daytime? Or a truancy ordinance that places a heavy burden on homeschool families? A surprisingly large number of Illinois municipalities have suddenly gotten the urge to impose daytime curfews or harsh truancy ordinances. We urge families in every town and county to watch for copycat proposals. The best way to get advance warning is to find out the date and time, and then attend the regular meeting of your council or board of aldermen. The meetings are usually monthly. Families in each town and county may want to join efforts to make sure at least one homeschool representative attends each board or council meeting. If that is not possible in your area, the next-best option is to read carefully the agenda and minutes of your municipal council or board. They are usually published on the internet. Protection of your freedom may depend on you! HSLDA has recently helped families fight daytime curfew or truancy ordinance issues in Salem, Belleville, Boone County, Canton, and Carlinville. We are looking into a report that Fairview Heights is considering a daytime curfew. HSLDA has no independent way to find out if a town or county is considering a harmful ordinance. We rely on local families to let us know! The proponents of daytime curfews promise they will deliver lower crime and higher graduation rates. They don't. They don't even create fear in the hearts of persons who are already inclined to defy the law. (Truancy jumped 73% during the 10 years after Belvidere adopted a daytime curfew.) Daytime curfews only create fear in the hearts of persons who already respect the law. They make people afraid to do what is right: to move about freely during the daytime. Working together, we can fight--and win--the battle for your freedom on the municipal level! Sincerely Yours, Scott Woodruff HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> "I saved my entire membership fee with one discount" "When I called Liberty to find out what kind of discount we could get, they told us we would 10% off our car insurance and 5% off our homeowner's insurance. What we will save is more than double what it costs to join HSLDA. With one child getting his driver's license this year, the savings will be a real blessing!"
