====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Maine--Access Bill Needs Crucial Help! Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: The bill to restore homeschoolers' access to special education services and the Aspirations Program (no-cost college classes for high school students) needs your help no later than Monday! Because of a parliamentary maneuver in the senate, the bill must pass both the house and the senate by a two-thirds vote. A vote is expected sometime on Tuesday. A number of homeschool families struggled after access to these programs was abruptly cut off. Even if you think you are not likely to participate in these programs, please help others for whom equal access is very important financially. Your senator and representative need to hear from you! ACTION REQUESTED Call your senator and representative and ask them to support LD 1197. Your message can be as simple as: "Please vote YES on LD 1197. Homeschooled children need the same access to special education services and the Aspirations Program as other children." Use our legislative toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=11610 to find the names and contact information for your senator and representative. BACKGROUND The Maine statutes certainly appear to give families equal access to these programs. And Maine homeschooled children actually had access for many, many years. But a "reinterpretation" was implemented by the various bureaucracies--without legislative approval--as a result of which children were denied access. Now the only way to restore access is for the legislature to take action by the passage of LD 1197. Thank you for standing with us for freedom! We called and asked about our HSLDA member discount and they lowered our premium by approx $95 per year...coincidentally the same amount as our HSLDA annual membership fee. Thought you'd want to know!!'"
