====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Illinois--100 Assemble to Stop Belleville's Daytime Curfew Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: A crowd estimated at 100 people attended Monday's Belleville Board of Aldermen meeting to say "no" to the proposed daytime curfew. Fifteen stood to speak against the ordinance. Only three spoke in favor. The mayor and several aldermen agreed that those who opposed the ordinance had sound arguments which were well organized and well presented. As a result, a revised draft of the ordinance has been prepared. We expect to obtain access to this draft shortly. We will review it carefully and follow up. ACTION REQUESTED--only if you live in the Belleville jurisdiction: Clear your calendar for the evening of July 5 at 7:00 p.m. The ordinance has been tabled, and the Board of Aldermen will bring it back up for consideration at that time. BACKGROUND Although individual ordinances must be fought on the local level, it's important that families all across the state be aware of what is happening in neighboring areas. HSLDA will send future bulletins about ordinances to all our Illinois contacts. The trend to push for daytime curfews and unreasonably strict truancy ordinances can no longer be viewed as simply a local issue. It must now be recognized that this is a state-wide issue.
