====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Illinois--Help Stop Daytime Curfew in Boone County Tomorrow June 14, 2011 Dear HSLDA members and friends in Boone County: If you are told that having a daytime curfew will help reduce truancy, don't believe it. Based on statistics from the Illinois State Board of Education, 136 students per year, on average, were chronically truant in Belvidere CUSD 100 in the 5 school years prior to the enactment of their daytime curfew in June 1996. But over the next 10 years, 235 students, on average, were chronically truant per year. That's an increase of 73% in chronic truancy AFTER the daytime curfew became law! Based on the same reports, fewer than 4 students per year were chronically truant, on average, over the last 5 years in North Boone CUSD 200. With chronic truancy so low in Boone County, it's hardly a matter for urgent legislation. But beyond that, history proves that a daytime curfew does nothing to reduce truancy, and may even increase it. ACTION REQUESTED Tomorrow please attend the 6:30 p.m. meeting of the board, at 1212 Logan Ave., Belvidere, to express your opposition to the curfew and truancy proposals. Before the meeting starts, fill out a public comment form and give it to the chairman so you can speak during the public comment section of the meeting. Thank you for standing with us for freedom! Sincerely yours, Scott A. Woodruff ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> How many news articles did you read this morning over your oatmeal?
