====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Illinois: Canton--Not Considering Daytime Curfew Some families may be under the incorrect impression that the city of Canton, IL, has been considering a daytime curfew. HSLDA opposes daytime curfews. We have initiated litigation on a number of daytime curfew issues over the years. However, I am not aware of any current effort in Canton to adopt a daytime curfew. But Canton recently amended its truancy ordinance, and that may be the source of the confusion. Canton has had a truancy ordinance for some time that applies to public and private school students. It applies to homeschool students automatically since a homeschool is a private school under Illinois law. Some changes were recently proposed to Canton's truancy ordinance. After an HSLDA member alerted me to the situation, I analyzed the proposed changes and asked that additional language be added to protect homeschoolers who are in the process of withdrawing from public school. The language I requested was added, and the changes were adopted. If you become aware of a proposal to change your city's or county's truancy ordinance, or add one, please let us know so we can analyze it to see if it creates a particular threat to the liberty of homeschool families. Scott Woodruff ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Extreme makeovers are for extreme circumstances... Most homeschools don't need an extreme makeover, but there is something to be said for attention to detail and recognition of accomplishments. Watch the media and you'll soon see that not everyone wants home educators and homeschooling to look good. HSLDA works hard to shed light on the good work of home educators so it's obvious that we don't need someone "making-over" our homeschools.
