====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== UPDATE -- State Super: "Homeschoolers Need More Oversight!" Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Thank you for contacting the West Virginia Department of Education regarding increasing state regulation of homeschooling. By way of an update, Liza Cordeiro from the department contacted HSLDA to clarify the intent behind the superintendent's statements. "The West Virginia Department of Education is in no way wanting to regulate those who are doing the right thing," Cordeiro told HSLDA. "We are not focusing on legitimate homeschoolers." But when HSLDA asked the department to retract its statements about calling for increased homeschool regulations, Ms. Cordeiro declined. While HSLDA appreciates the department's clarification, new regulations on homeschooling would impact all homeschoolers, the vast majority of whom are doing just fine. West Virginia's homeschool law is already one of the more burdensome in the nation, and empirical research has shown that increasing state regulation has no effect on homeschoolers' outstanding academic achievement. Homeschool students in states with low regulation score just as high, or higher, than states with high regulation. (See Homeschool Progress Report 2009: Academic Achievement Demographics). http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=11256 Thank you for standing in defense of homeschool freedom. Standing with you!
