====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Connecticut: Calls Needed to Your State Representative Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: More bad news! Senate Bill 930, legislation that would eliminate a parent's right to determine whether a 6-year-old must attend school, passed the full Senate on May 12, 2011. It is now on the House calendar for a vote any day now. Your calls are needed today to stop this unwarranted infringement on the right of parents to direct the education of their children. As originally introduced, Senate Bill 930 would have eliminated completely the option that parents now have not to send a 6-year-old to school. The amended version of this bill passed by the Senate would permit a parent to keep a 6-year-old out of school only if (1) a physician certified that the child should not attend school until age 7 or (2) the child had been identified as having a developmental delay. Even with these exceptions, the parent would not be permitted to exercise his or her independent judgment as to when a child should begin formal instruction. This bill has a lot of momentum and is moving quickly through the legislature, mostly because there has been hardly any opposition to it. But hundreds of telephone calls and emails can turn this bill around. Members of the House need to know that Connecticut families do not want the state to exercise more control over their children's education. Action Requested: 1. Please call or email your state representative with this message or something similar in your own words: "Please vote against Senate Bill 930, which would eliminate the right of parents to exercise independent judgment as to whether to send a 6-year-old to school. Current law permits parents to wait until the child is 7. Parents, not others, are in the best position to determine when their child is ready for formal education." Please do not identify yourself as a homeschooling family, since this issue is broader than just homeschooling. It affects all families in Connecticut with young children.
