====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== California: Los Angeles Public Hearing on Daytime Curfews Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Last year, Home School Legal Defense Association sued the City of Los Angeles and its police department on behalf of two homeschooled teenagers who were arrested for violating the Los Angeles daytime curfew. Even though the students' school wasn't in session, the police ignored the children's explanation that they were homeschooled, ignored their mother's confirmation over the phone, and transported them to a "truancy processing center" where they were held for over three hours. On Monday, April 18, the Public Safety Committee of the Los Angeles City Council will host a public hearing on the impact of the daytime curfew law and truancy tickets in Los Angeles. Darren Jones, a litigation attorney with HSLDA, will be testifying about the numerous cases we defend where homeschoolers are improperly cited for violating daytime curfews. HSLDA has vigorously opposed daytime curfews around the country, because we believe that they are an unfair burden on freedom-loving families. We encourage homeschooling families to attend the hearing, which will accept testimony on the ways that daytime curfews impact public, private, and homeschooled students. The hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on April 18, in Room 1010 of Los Angeles City Hall at 200 N. Spring St. Standing with you in liberty, Darren A. Jones HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Have you ever yelled into the wind, only to hear the sound of your voice blown back at you? It's hard to be heard in the midst of a storm. Trying to influence federal legislation is much like yelling to be heard while standing in a fierce wind. Yet when 80,000 voices join together, they become a powerful force that cannot be drowned out. Join HSLDA to be heard above the tempests that threaten homeschool freedoms.
