====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Texas: House Considers Opposition to National Standards Dear Texas HSLDA Members and Friends, HSLDA has long opposed the federal government's support for national education standards, curriculum, and testing. (For more information visit http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=10854 ). We believe that nationalized education decisions hurt parental control over education by putting key decisions of what and how children learn into the hands of bureaucrats in Washington, D.C. Over the long run, this could even impact the freedom of homeschool parents to have the freedom to choose how to educate their children at home. We are excited to let you know that the Texas House of Representatives is considering legislation that would protect the right of state and local authorities--not national "experts"--to decide educational standards for Texas schoolchildren. State Representative Dan Huberty has introduced H.B. 2923, relating to state sovereignty over curriculum standards, assessments, and student information. There will be a hearing for this bill on Thursday, April 14, upon adjournment of the House (approximately between noon and 4 p.m.). The hearing will be held in the state Capitol Extension Room E2.010. We encourage you to attend this hearing and support H.B. 2923. For more information, you can contact State Representative Dan Huberty at 512-463-0331. Very truly yours, Darren Jones HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> "I saved my entire membership fee with one discount" "When I called Liberty to find out what kind of discount we could get, they told us we would 10% off our car insurance and 5% off our homeowner's insurance. What we will save is more than double what it costs to join HSLDA. With one child getting his driver's license this year, the savings will be a real blessing!"
