====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Illinois--SR 92 Epilogue, ICHE Legislative Day Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, True to her word, Sen. Kimberly Lightford did not bring her SR 92 (UN Convention on the Rights of the Child--CRC) up for consideration during yesterday's meeting of the Illinois Senate's Executive Committee. On Monday and Tuesday, her office was receiving calls opposing her resolution at the rate of about 1 per minute. This was her second opportunity to get to know Illinois homeschool parents--her first was on February 15 when she chaired the committee hearing on SB 136, the homeschool registration bill. But now that the urgency of SB 136 and SR 92 is passed, you have an excellent opportunity to get to know your senator and representative in a more relaxed atmosphere. On April 27, Illinois Christian Home Educators (ICHE) is hosting a Legislative Day in Springfield. It will include singing, fellowship and delivery of homemade cherry pies to lawmakers! To find out more, go to http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=10839 Please make every effort to participate and meet your senator and representative. Having a personal relationship with a lawmaker can bear big dividends during a time of crisis. If you simply can't attend, try to meet your senator and representative in your local area after the current session ends on May 31. Finally, a few words of appreciation. Rev. Bob Vanden Bosch (with Concerned Christian Americans) provided a valuable conduit of communication between homeschoolers and Sen. Lightford. ParentalRights.Org, the nation's foremost advocate for parental rights, asked their contacts to make calls and provided us with a powerful written analysis of the CRC which I expect helped open many eyes to the CRC's true nature. ICHE, the state's prominent homeschool organization, was a powerful partner in the fight against SR 92. Other local and regional homeschool groups also did excellent work in helping spread the word about SR 92. While I cannot thank them individually, their work was deeply appreciated and significantly contributed to the final outcome. Illinois homeschoolers distinguished themselves this year in the vigor with which they protected their precious freedom when threatened by SB 136 and SR 92. Well done! Sincerely Yours, Scott Woodruff HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Who are the nation's best lobbyists? We don't know that this has ever been determined; but we do know that HSLDA's Federal Relations Department is the only national organization lobbying on behalf of homeschoolers on Capitol Hill.
