====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Maine--Committee Hears Evidence to Restore Aspirations and Special Ed Services Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Thank you for calling and attending yesterday's hearing on LD 1197! The Maine legislature's Education and Cultural Affairs Committee heard powerful evidence in support of our bill to restore special education services and Aspirations program benefits to homsechoolers. I submitted written testimony explaining important background issues, and Ed Green of Homeschoolers of Maine read it to the committee and gave his own testimony. Six homeschool moms whose children were denied access to these programs told their stories of disappointed expectations and opportunities lost. As is their usual practice, the committee did not vote yesterday. A work session will be scheduled soon when they will consider possible changes to the bill, and then vote. Because the hearing went well, however, we believe there are grounds to be cautiously optimistic. It is impossible to restore what families lost during the past year when these two important services were abruptly taken away. But Homeschoolers of Maine and HSLDA will continue to work hard to correct the laws so other families do not suffer the same. Thank you for standing with us for freedom! Sincerely, Scott Woodruff HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> What's the shortest distance between two homeschoolers? HSLDA's elert service!
