====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Maine: Call, Attend Crucial Hearing in Augusta on April 6 to Restore Equal Access Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: For many years, Maine homeschool students enjoyed the same access to special education services and low-cost college classes as public school students. But beginning about a year ago, homeschoolers were told they could not participate in these programs unless they entrusted their children to the public school system for at least one academic course. A family that continued to provide all academic courses through home instruction would be penalized for their convictions: they would be locked out of these tax-payer funded programs. Representative David Burns has filed a bill, LD 1197, that is designed to restore homeschoolers' equal access to these important programs. At 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6, the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee of the Maine legislature will hold a crucial hearing on LD 1197 in Room 202 of the Cross Building, 111 Sewall St Augusta, Maine. We need your help! ACTION REQUESTED 1. If you tried to get access to special education services, or low-cost college classes (i.e., Senior Year Plus, Post-Secondary Enrollment Option, Aspirations Program) for your homeschooled student but were turned down, PLEASE come to the hearing on Wednesday and tell your story. If possible, email Ed Green at homeschl@midcoast.com to let him know you're coming. He has offered to coordinate efforts. Your testimony could be crucial! 2. Even if you were not personally rejected, help those who were! > Come to the hearing Wednesday to show your support; > Call the committee members indicated below corresponding to the letter with which your last name begins; > Also, if your senator or representative is listed below, call him or her and along with your message about LD 1197, and remind them you are a constituent.
