====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Florida - Calls Needed to Support Parental Rights Amendment Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, House Memorial 557 and Senate Memorial 954 are parental rights amendments that we are supporting. Senate Memorial 954 is currently on the agenda for a hearing in the Governmental Oversight and Accountability Committee on March 30, 2011. This memorial urges the United States Congress to pass an amendment to the U.S. Constitution relating to the protection of parental rights and to submit it to the States for ratification. A memorial is a special form of concurrent resolution addressed to an executive agency or another legislative body, usually Congress, that expresses the sentiment of the Florida Legislature on a matter outside its legislative jurisdiction. If you support the parental rights amendment, we ask that you contact the Governmental Oversight and Accountability Committee and your own senator to urge them to support Senate Memorial 954. ACTION REQUESTED 1) Please call or email each member of the Governmental Oversight and Accountability Committee members listed below and give them the following message in your own words: "Please vote 'Yes' on Senate Memorial 954, urging Congress to pass the Parental Rights Amendment. I ask that you support SM 954 because the Parental Rights Amendment will add explicit text to the Constitution of the United States regarding the fundamental right of parents to direct the upbringing and education of their children. These rights have been recognized by a number of Supreme Court decisions for over 85 years. Recent federal court cases have created confusion and ambiguity about the fundamental nature of parental rights in America."
