====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Wisconsin--School Census: "Response Required by Law!"--Not Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: HSLDA member Genevieve DeBerry (name changed to protect her privacy) recently sent us a flyer she had received from the Somerset, Wisconsin, School District. In large print, the flyer blared, "IMMEDIATE RESPONSE REQUIRED BY LAW!" The inside of the flyer pointed to Wisconsin Statute section 120.18 as authority for the demand. That statute mandates that school districts conduct a census (or "school count"), but it does NOT mandate that families participate in the census, nor are we aware of any other statute that does. If you choose to respond to the census nonetheless, be aware that under some circumstances your reply could be open to public inspection. The census asks for the date of birth of all your children. Your children's birth dates are sensitive, confidential information. Criminals intent on stealing a person's identity find their job easier if they can obtain a person's full name and birth date. If you choose to participate, consider leaving birth date blank. Instead, consider penciling in the phrase "as of the 3rd Friday in September" beside the word "age", and then inserting the age of each of your children as of that date. If any official points to any statute other than section 120.18 to convince you to participate in the census, please let us know so we can review it. Sincerely, Scott Woodruff HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> How many news articles did you read this morning over your oatmeal?
