====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Rhode Island--Committees Hold UN Resolutions for "Further Study" Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Thank you for your calls! Wednesday evening the two committees considering legislation (HR 5517 and SR 494) that would have urged the U.S. Senate to ratify the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) voted to hold them for further study. ACTION REQUESTED 1. If you have NOT made calls to oppose these pieces of legislation, please do so (see yesterday's e-lerts for details). While the resolutions have been "held for further study" they can easily be brought back to their respective legislative committees for action on short notice. It is vitally important that committee members know that you oppose them. 2. Please email your friends and ask them to read "Twenty Things You Need to Know About the CRC." http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=10653 Sometimes we only have a short time frame for taking action. People who are well-informed can quickly understand the need for action. Reading the article at the link above will help make a person well informed. BACKGROUND Both of these pieces of legislation are "resolutions"--even if passed, they would not have the force of law. But the long struggle against the CRC will consist of many individual skirmishes and battles. If any state passes a resolution urging the U.S. Senate to ratify the CRC, it gives the pro-CRC forces ammunition. They can take the state resolution to their U.S. senators and say, "Senator, you should vote to ratify the CRC because the legislature of your state is urging you to." Of course the senator could still make up his own mind, but there is no doubt that a state resolution could influence him. There is no skirmish, no battle, no field of discussion, where those who want the government to control parent-child relationships should be not be challenged. The Rhode Island Guild of Home Teachers and HSLDA are united in opposing these pieces of legislation. Thank you for standing with us for freedom! Sincerely, Scott A.
