Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: The Senate Education Committee will very soon be taking up two vitally important bills: Parent-taught driver education (HF 584) and Independent Private Instruction (HF 588--a new homeschool option with less red tape.) Homeschoolers need to flood the phone lines of members of the committee now! ACTION REQUESTED 1. Calls and emails to Senator Tom Rielly about driver ed are no longer needed. The bill has been moved from his committee to the Senate Education Committee. 2. Please call every member of the Senate Education Committee. If you are a constituent of one, mention that when you call. Use our Legislative Toolbox http://www.hslda.org/toolbox to find who your senator is. 3. Your message can be a simple as, "Please support HF 584. Parent-taught driver education saves lives. Please support HF 588. Parents and school staff who spend less time shuffling paperwork can spend more time teaching." This year we have a tremendous opportunity to undo the damage done by Vilsack's veto, but we need strong support from the homeschool community. Parent-taught driver's ed saves lives. It is successfully operating in several other states. It's time for Iowa families to benefit as well. The Independent Private Instruction Bill creates an entirely new option for homeschooling. Families using this option would not need to hire a supervising teacher, or file an annual notice and assessment. This simpler option would be similar to options available to families in many other states. The Network of Iowa Christian Home Educators and HSLDA are united in supporting parent-taught driver ed and the new option of Independent Private Instruction.
