Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: On Wednesday of this week at 9:45 a.m., the Senate Education Committee will hold a hearing on the amended version of House Bill 1211, legislation that would preserve the improvements to North Dakota's homeschool law enacted in 2009. Your calls and emails are needed to let members of the committee know that home educators want this bill to be passed. On February 15, 2011, the House Education Committee approved an amended version of House Bill 1211. Unfortunately, the committee stripped from the bill everything proposed by the North Dakota Home School Association except the improvements to the law enacted in 2009. But even the amended version is favorable to homeschoolers, because unless it passes, the law will revert to what it was prior to 2009. This would mean that parents with a high school diploma or GED must once again be monitored by a state-certified teacher during the first two years of homeschooling, and home education would have to be conducted only in the child's home. On February 22, 2011, the full House passed the amended version by a vote of 75 to 19 and sent it to the Senate. Members of the Senate Education Committee need to hear from you right now! ACTION REQUESTED: 1. Please call and/or e-mail all members of the Senate Education Committee and urge them to vote in favor of the amended version of House Bill 1211 with this message or something similar in your own words: "Please vote for the amended version of House Bill 1211 which would remove the sunset clauses from the law enacted in 2009 and make the changes permanent." 2. Please forward this email to every family you know who is not a member of HSLDA and urge them to contact members of the committee with this same message. 3. Please attend the Senate Education Committee hearing in the Missouri River Room at the Capitol Building in Bismarck on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at 9:45 a.m. to demonstrate your support of this bill.
