====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== New Hampshire--More Action Needed to Reduce Reporting: HB 429 Moves to Senate Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Your calls have made a difference. The New Hampshire House of Representatives voted to pass House bill 429 by a vote of 210-134. The bill will now be sent to the senate. If passed in the senate and signed by the governor, HB 429 will empower parents to exempt their 16- and 17-year-old students from compulsory school attendance. HSLDA would like to thank all those who made the effort to contact their state representative. Please take action, as requested below, to help this bill pass through the senate. ACTION REQUESTED Since the bill will soon be referred to the Senate Education Committee, please contact members of the committee and urge them to support HB 429. Although this bill will benefit homeschoolers, it is not specifically homeschool legislation; therefore, it is not necessary that you identify yourself as a homeschooler. Please give your legislator the following message in your own words: "Please support House Bill 429. Parents, not the government, know what is best for their children. Parents should have the right to determine when their children are ready to withdraw from school attendance. HB 429 empowers parents to make this decision for their children in accordance with each child's individual needs and circumstances. Some students may be well served by moving into a college career early or entering the workforce before they reach the age of 18. This bill will improve educational outcomes for all children in New Hampshire by empowering parents to do what they know is best for their children." Contact information for members of the Senate Education Committee is below: Senator Nancy Stiles - Chair 603-271-6933 nancy.stiles@leg.state.nh.us Senator James Forsythe - Vice Chair 603-271-3096 james.forsythe@leg.state.nh.us Senator Sharon Carson 603-271-2674 sharon.carson@leg.state.nh.us Senator Molly Kelly 603-271-2166 molly.kelly@leg.state.nh.us Senator Russell Prescott 603-271-3074 russell.prescott@leg.state.nh.us For more information about this bill, visit www.hslda.org/nh .
