====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Vermont--Action Needed to Oppose MANDATORY TESTING Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, The Vermont Department of Education (DOE) is working on revising a legislative proposal to dramatically modify the Vermont home study statute. While many of the proposed changes appear to be positive, the commissioner of education has indicated that he is unwilling to compromise on mandatory testing. Unfortunately, the real problem with this process is that the DOE has not sought input or collaboration with homeschoolers. The Department developed its own draft of proposed changes to the law without involving homeschoolers or their advocates in the discussion process. As a result of a hearing this week before the Vermont Senate, the DOE is now trying to draft a bill that the Education Committee can work on by next Tuesday, March 15. Because the issues are complicated and require careful consideration, there is simply not enough time for homeschoolers to have the input they deserve. Therefore, we are asking you to contact the DOE and ask them to pull their proposed legislation and to work with homeschoolers, homeschool leaders and advocates like Retta Dunlap and HSLDA and others to allow for more input and participation. The Vermont home study law does need to be changed to reduce its burdensome process, but let's work together to do it right the first time. ACTION REQUESTED Please contact the Vermont Department of Education and Home Study Department and politely ask them to withdraw their proposed legislation. Ask them to work with homeschoolers and their representatives to develop an approach that we can all live with and that will improve the law by reducing burdens on families and the Department. Please contact the following Individuals as soon as possible: Assistant Commissioner of Education Rae Ann Knopf 802-828-5101 rae.knopf@state.vt.us Michael Mulcahey, Interagency Coordinator 802-828-5108 mike.mulcahy@state.vt.us Karen Agnew, Home Study Coordinator 802-828-3138 Karen.Agnew@state.vt.us Brynne Reed, Home Study Coordinator 802 828-5113 Brynne.Reed@state.vt.us Thank you for working with us to preserve homeschooling freedom in Vermont!
