====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== South Dakota--School Approval of Test Choice Not Required Dear HSLDA Members: A number of school districts have recently sent letters to families saying that either they must notify the school of the test they are going to use, or that they must get school approval if they plan to use any test other than the SAT 10. This is not correct. The law is very clear that when testing is required (grades 2, 4, 8 and 11), parents can choose any nationally standardized test: "The test may be ... another nationally standardized achievement test chosen by and provided at the expense of the child's parent ..." South Dakota Codified Laws sec.13-27-3, second paragraph. We believe school districts are sending out these letters because of a memo they received from the state Department of Education. I have sent a letter asking the author of the state memo to send a follow-up correction to school districts. If you receive a letter from your school district about testing that is not a form letter, call us for guidance. But if it's a form letter, families in most situations should feel comfortable ignoring it, unless you wish to participate in your school district's test administration. Sincerely, Scott Woodruff HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> You can get a little latte or a lotta legal.
