====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== South Dakota--HB 1133 Heads to Governor! Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: In an historic vote today, the South Dakota Senate unanimously passed House Bill 1133, which will put an end to school board involvement in a family's decision to start homeschooling. The bill now heads to Governor Daugaard's desk. Upon signature, it will place South Dakota in the mainstream of states which acknowledge the right of parents to initiate a homeschool program without waiting for a school board to take action. Thank you for your phone calls and other amazing efforts! ACTION REQUESTED 1. While this bill is the fruit of many efforts, Representative Lance Russell (R-30, Custer, Fall River, Pennington) deserves a prominent place in our gratitude. He worked hard on this bill from the very beginning, and never let up. He could have incurred the wrath of the powerful education establishment in sponsoring a bill that made it simpler to start homeschooling. For his courage, commitment, and diligence, he deserves our thanks. Please consider sending him a short note of appreciation. 2. South Dakota Christian Home Educators was the moving force behind the bill. They found an excellent sponsor, and they worked hard to present powerful testimony during the bill's two hearings. If you are not a member of SDCHE, please consider joining. They are a strong and united voice for homeschoolers across the entire state. Your membership dues of $20 will allow them to continue their important work. To join, go to: http://hslda.org/elink.asp?ID=10432 BACKGROUND Interim Secretary of Education Dr. Melody Schopp worked quickly, courteously, and professionally with homeschool representatives throughout the process. She requested a change in the bill as originally filed. We felt the change was acceptable. After the amendment, she worked with the South Dakota School Board Association and subsequently testified in support of the bill during both committee hearings. I believe she will continue to treat South Dakota homeschool families fairly. Thank you for standing with us for freedom! Sincerely, Scott Woodruff HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> You can get a little latte or a lotta legal.
