Rielly for Parent-taught Driver's Ed Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: A bill that would give homeschool parents the right to teach driver's education to their own children needs your help right away! The bill, SF 146, was assigned to a subcommittee chaired by Senator Jeff Danielson. But Sen. Danielson refuses to allow the bill to come up for a hearing. He wants to kill the bill. Senator Tom Rielly has the power to reassign the bill to a subcommittee chaired by Senator Dandekar, who supports the bill, and would allow a hearing. ACTION REQUESTED If you live in Senator Tom Rielly's district (D-38, which includes a large area between Des Moines and Iowa City), please: 1. Seek him out in your district by attending his legislative forums or calling on him (http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=10389) in the district. 2. Contact him at the Capitol by e-mail (tom.rielly@legis.state.ia.us) or phone (515-281-3371). 3. Email the Network of Iowa Christian Home Educators (NICHE) and let them know about your contact at lobbyist@homeschooliowa.org . Your message can be as simple as: "Driver education remains the only subject that homeschooling parents are not allowed to teach their children. Evidence shows parent-taught driver education is safer and cheaper for both families and the public. This legislation is a top priority for homeschool parents in your district. Please do not kill SF 146 without giving it a fair chance. Please reassign the bill to a subcommittee chaired by Senator Dandekar, the sponsor of the bill, and support the bill with your votes."
