====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== South Dakota--House Bill 1133 Update and Action Request Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: The Senate's other business this week prevented it from voting on HB 1133. Right now, families are vulnerable to prosecution if they dare teach their children at home before the local school board has finished its process--however long it may take--of handling the homeschool paperwork. HB 1133 closes that window of vulnerability. There is a strong likelihood that HB 1133 will come up for a vote the coming week of Feb. 21. ACTION REQUESTED 1. If you have not already done so, call your senator to ask him to vote in favor of HB 1133. Use our Legislative Toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=10342 to find out who your senator is. 2. Your message can be as simple as, "Please support HB 1133 as amended. It protects parents' rights by allowing them to start homeschooling when they choose, without fear of prosecution and without government red tape delays." 3. Please pass this message along to other South Dakota homeschoolers! BACKGROUND The South Dakota Christian Home Educators organization strongly supports HB 1133. Kristin Shippy filed her homeschool form in early November. She heard absolutely nothing for more than eight weeks. They started homeschooling immediately, but they were vulnerable to prosecution for truancy while waiting for bureaucrats to slowly process their paperwork. Kristin testified about the terrible bind South Dakota's archaic "approval" requirement put their family in. Her testimony helped convince the Senate Education Committee to vote unanimously in favor of the bill early this week. HB 1133 would put an end to this type of abuse. Your paperwork would be valid and effective immediately upon filing. It should not take an act of a school board before parents can exercise their right to choose their child's education! Thank you for standing with us for freedom!
