Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, House Bill 86, which passed unanimously in the House, is now receiving some opposition in the Senate. This is a straightforward piece of legislation which simply adds clarification to a bill passed by the legislature last year. Please take action, as requested below, to ensure that this important clarification takes place. ACTION REQUESTED Please call, email, or visit Senator Tony Ross, the Senate majority floor leader, and urge him to support this legislation. His contact information is below. Please communicate the following message in your own words: "Please support House Bill 86. This bill is a straightforward piece of legislation passed unanimously by the House. It simply provides clarity to the compulsory attendance statute, which will prevent confusion and protect the freedom of non-public school students." Senator Tony Ross (307) 632-8957 tross@wyoming.com BACKGROUND Last year, former Representative Debra Hammons introduced a bill, which became law, requiring parents of children under 18 to meet with school district personnel regarding their education plan prior to withdrawal from school attendance. Because of potential confusion, this law requires clarification so that it only applies to public school students. HB 86 will provide this necessary clarification to prevent school officials from applying this section of the law to homeschool or private school students.
