====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== South Dakota-- HB 1133 Update and Urgent Action Request! Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Great news! This morning the Senate Education Committee unanimously voted to pass House Bill 1133, a bill that would bring South Dakota into the national mainstream by allowing families to initiate homeschooling without waiting for government "approval." Thank you for your calls of support to the members of the Education Committee! The next step for this bill is a vote on the floor of the Senate, which could take place as soon as tomorrow (February 16). It's crucial that you contact your state senator immediately to let him or her know that this bill should become law. ACTION REQUESTED 1. Call your senator to ask him to vote in favor of HB 1133. Use our Legislative Toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=10342 to find out who your senator is. 2. Your message can be as simple as, "Please support HB 1133 as amended. It protects parents' rights by allowing them to start homeschooling when they choose, without fear of prosecution and without government red tape delays." 3. Please pass this message along to other South Dakota homeschoolers! BACKGROUND One family filed their homeschool form in early November. The family heard absolutely nothing for more than eight weeks. They started homeschooling immediately, but they could have been prosecuted for truancy while waiting for bureaucrats to process their paperwork. Another family filed their form and were told they could not take their children out of public school until the school committee approved them for homeschooling. Then they were told their paperwork would be denied--for a reason not allowed under law. Then the school staff "lost" the form. After legal intervention, the school system performed its duty--29 days after the family filed its form! Another family filed their form and were told the kids must stay in public school until the school board took action. The school board then denied their exemption--for a reason not permitted under law. Only after legal intervention did the school board reverse its decision. HB 1133 would put an end to this type of abuse. Your paperwork would be valid and effective immediately upon filing. It should not take an act of a school board before parents can exercise their right to choose their child's education! Thank you for standing with us for freedom! Sincerely, Scott Woodruff HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> How many acorns can a chipmunk hold in its cheeks? We don't know! But we do know that gathering little by little enables ordinary folks to prepare for hard times. That principle is behind HSLDA's payment plan: by paying a month at a time, families can receive an annual HSLDA membership. Meanwhile, they can feel secure as they homeschool and focus on other priorities -- their children. Don't go nuts trying to pay for membership all at once. Choose one of our convenient payment plans.
