====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== West Virginia: Delegate Introduces Draconian Bill Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Today, Delegate Michael Manypenny introduced House Bill 3152 which would severely infringe on the rights of homeschooling parents in West Virginia. The bill restricts homeschoolers from taking any test other than the "WESTEST" in order to comply with the testing assessment requirement in the homeschool law and would grant broad rule-making authority to the State Board of Education to determine whether a child could "remain in a home school environment." The bill appears to intend to seek to require all homeschooled students take the WESTTEST which is the state-sponsored and administered public school assessment test. Delegate Manypenny is the sole sponsor of this ill-advised piece of legislation which has been referred to the education committee. ACTION REQUESTED None at this time. HSLDA is working closely with CHEWV and Heritage Communications to oppose this legislation. We will continue to monitor this legislation and inform you if and when action is needed to defend your freedom. For more information about the bill you can visit: http://www.hslda.org/hs/state/WV Thank you for your support as we stand together to defend freedom for homeschooling in West Virginia! Sincerely, Michael P. Donnelly, Esq. Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> How long are you in for? Some families are facing what seems like a lifelong commitment to homeschooling, with children at both ends of the spectrum -- some graduating and some just reaching school age. If you're going to be "in" for a while, consider a lifetime membership with HSLDA. It's a good deal for families with more than 10 years of homeschooling ahead.
