====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== South Dakota--Your Calls Needed to Senate Committee for HB 1133! Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Your phone calls are needed now to support HB 1133! This bill would bring South Dakota into the national mainstream by allowing families to initiate homeschooling without waiting for government "approval." The bill has come out of the House, and it will probably have a hearing next Tuesday or Thursday morning in the Senate Education Committee. Your phone calls could prove crucial in convincing the senators on the committee that this bill should become law. ACTION REQUESTED 1. If your senator is on the Senate Education Committee, call your senator--see the list below. Use our legislative toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox to find out who your senator is. 2. Please contact the chairman of the Senate Education Committee whether or not your senator is on the committee. 3. Your message can be as simple as, "Please support HB 1133 as amended. It protects parents' rights by allowing them to start homeschooling when they choose, without fear of prosecution and without government red tape delays." 4. Make plans to attend the hearing. A big turnout from homeschoolers will send a powerful message to the committee! We will let you know as soon as a definite date is set. CONTACT INFORMATION Senate Education Committee Chairman Cooper Garnos (Chair) (605) 773-3821 Senate Education Committee members Jim Bradford (605) 685-4241 Bob Gray (605) 773-3821 J. Mark Johnston (Vice Chair) (605) 929-5592 Timothy Rave (605) 360-7190 Todd Schlekeway (605) 310-8600 BACKGROUND INFORMATION If a hearing is held next week, it will probably be on Tuesday or Thursday morning. No phone calls are needed to Elizabeth Kraus (Meade, Pennington area). She is on the Senate Education Committee, but she is a sponsor on the bill, so we know she supports it. One family filed their homeschool form in early November. The family heard absolutely nothing for more than eight weeks. They started homeschooling immediately, but they could have been prosecuted for truancy while waiting for bureaucrats to process their paperwork. Another family filed their form and were told they could not take their children out of public school until the school committee approved them for homeschooling. Then they were told their paperwork would be denied--for a reason not allowed under law. Then the school staff "lost" the form. After legal intervention, the school system performed its duty--29 days after the family filed its form! Another family filed their form and were told the kids must stay in public school until the school board took action. The school board then denied their exemption--for a reason not permitted under law. Only after legal intervention did the school board reverse its decision. HB 1133 would put an end to this type of abuse. Your paperwork would be valid and effective immediately upon filing. It should not take an act of a school board before parents can exercise their right to choose their child's education! Thank you for standing with us for freedom! Sincerely, Scott Woodruff HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> How many news articles did you read this morning over your oatmeal?
