====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Montana -- Bad Tax Bill Stalls Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Good news! Montana House Bill 247, the bill requiring that a child attend school in order to be claimed as a dependent on a state income tax return, was tabled by the House Taxation Committee on February 2, 2011. While this bill is not dead, it is unlikely that it will receive further attention during this legislative session. We will continue to track its status. House Bill 247 would provide that a child who is over the age of 12 and under the age of 19 may not be claimed as a dependent on a state income tax return unless the child was enrolled in school or had received a high school diploma or GED. The current compulsory attendance age in Montana is from 7 to 16 or completion of the eighth grade, whichever is later. House Bill 247 is an income tax bill which attempts to meddle with the education law of the state. It is nothing more than a back-door effort to increase the compulsory school attendance age and penalize families whose children don't meet the new educational definition of "dependent." Many thanks to all of you who contacted members of the House Taxation Committee and expressed your opposition to this bill. There is no doubt that homeschoolers made the difference in the committee's action. To view the text of this bill, please go to http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=10072 . Very truly yours, Dewitt T.
