====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Montana: Calls Needed to Stop Driver's License Bill Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Montana House Bill 215 would prohibit anyone under 18 years old from obtaining or keeping a driver's license unless the person was enrolled in school or had received a high school diploma or GED. Your calls are needed to stop this attempt by state lawmakers to condition issuance of a driver's license on school attendance. The current compulsory attendance age in Montana is from 7 to 16 or completion of the eighth grade, whichever is later. House Bill 215 is a driver's license bill which attempts to meddle with the education law of the state. It is nothing more than a back-door effort to increase the compulsory school attendance age. The hearing on this bill by the House Education Committee is scheduled for this Friday, February 4, at 3:00 p.m. in Room 137 of the Capitol Building. The sponsor of this legislation is Representative Mike Miller (R-Helmville). Members of the House Education Committee need to hear from you today! Action Requested: 1. Please call and/or email members of the House Education Committee with this message or something similar in your own words: "Please vote against House Bill 215 which would prohibit anyone under 18 years old from obtaining or keeping a driver's license unless the person was enrolled in school or had received a high school diploma or GED. Whether a person is eligible for a driver's license should not be determined by school attendance." When contacting members of the committee do not identify yourself as a homeschooler. This issue is broader than just homeschooling. The members of the House Education Committee are as follows: Last names beginning with A-M please contact: Chair: Scott Reichner (R-Bigfork) Vice Chair: Kristin Hansen (R-Havre) Vice Chair: Edie McClafferty (D-Butte) Bryce Bennett (D-Missoula) Mark Blasdel (R-Somers) Joanne Blyton (R-Joliet) Christy Clark (R-Choteau) Lila Evans (R-Browning) Last names beginning with N-Z please contact: Sue Malek (D-Missoula) Jonathan McNiven (R-Huntley) Jean Price (D-Great Falls) Daniel Salomon (R-Ronan) Bob Wagner (R-Harrison) Ted Washburn (R-Bozeman) Jeffrey Welborn (R-Dillon) Franke Wilmer (D-Bozeman) You can leave a message for the House Education Committee by calling the Session Information Desk at (406) 444-4800. Black, III HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Have you ever yelled into the wind, only to hear the sound of your voice blown back at you? It's hard to be heard in the midst of a storm. Trying to influence federal legislation is much like yelling to be heard while standing in a fierce wind. Yet when 80,000 voices join together, they become a powerful force that cannot be drowned out. Join HSLDA to be heard above the tempests that threaten homeschool freedoms.
