====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Montana: Calls Needed to Stop Tax Bill Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Montana House Bill 247 would provide that a child who is over the age of 12 and under the age of 19 may not be claimed as a dependent on a state income tax return unless the child was enrolled in school or had received a high school diploma or GED. Your calls are needed to stop this outrageous attempt by state lawmakers to define a "dependent" by school attendance. The current compulsory attendance age in Montana is from 7 to 16 or completion of the eighth grade, whichever is later. House Bill 247 is an income tax bill which attempts to meddle with the education law of the state. It is nothing more than a back-door effort to increase the compulsory school attendance age and penalize families whose children don't meet the new educational definition of "dependent." The hearing on this bill by the House Taxation Committee is scheduled for this Thursday, January 27, at 8:00 a.m. in Room 152 of the Capitol Building. The sponsor of this legislation is Representative Mike Miller (R-Helmville), the vice chair of the committee. Members of the House Taxation Committee need to hear from you today! Action Requested: 1. Please call and/or email as many members of the House Taxation Committee with this message or something similar in your own words: "Please vote against House Bill 247 which would provide that a child who is over the age of 12 and under the age of 19 may not be claimed as a dependent on a state income tax return unless the child was enrolled in school or had received a high school diploma or GED. Whether a child is a dependent should not be determined by school attendance." When contacting members of the committee, do not identify yourself as a homeschooler. This issue is broader than just homeschooling.
