====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Montana--Compulsory Attendance Age Bill Defeated Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Good news! Yesterday the Senate Education Committee voted 5-5 in an effort to pass Senate Bill 44 out of committee. This tie vote essentially killed the bill. There is a procedure by which the full Senate could force it to the Senate floor, but this is highly unlikely. Senate Bill 44 would have increased the compulsory school attendance age in Montana from 16 to 18, graduation from high school, or receipt of a GED as the time when a student was permitted to leave school. Parents would have been locked into another two years of homeschooling at a time when the child may have wished to pursue other educational options or begin a vocation. Many thanks to Steve White of the Montana Coalition of Home Educators and others who testified against this bill and contacted members of the Senate Education Committee. This legislative victory is due directly to the efforts of homeschoolers who expressed their opposition to this unwarranted attempt to expand state control over education.
