====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Ohio--Mentor Proposes Daytime Curfew Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, HSLDA has discovered through several news reports that the city of Mentor was considering a daytime curfew ordinance for children ages 6 through 17. We contacted the City Council and learned that the curfew has been removed from their agenda, but we wanted to make you aware of it. You can read a Fox 8 News article on the curfew here: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=9755 . If passed, this legislation would undermine the freedom and liberty we enjoy in the United States. Your children could be taken to the local police station to verify who they are and that they have a valid excuse to be in a public place. Any person who violates the ordinance could be found guilty of a misdemeanor. You would have less freedom to send your 15-year-old daughter to pick up some groceries or let your 16-year-old son go to music lessons across town. HSLDA will continue to monitor the status of the ordinance and keep you informed. BACKGROUND This problem is more than hypothetical. Even when exceptions for homeschoolers are written into the curfew law, police officers frequently presume that any school-age child is truant, regardless of whether they are homeschooled. For more information on daytime curfews, see our analysis of this issue at: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=9756 . An extensive study by the National Center for School Engagement has found that daytime curfews are ineffective, and may even be counter-productive, when dealing with truancy in public schools. To see the 230-page study use the following link: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=9757 . Thank you for standing with us for freedom! Standing with you, Michael P. Donnelly, Esq. HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> How long are you in for? Some families are facing what seems like a lifelong commitment to homeschooling, with children at both ends of the spectrum -- some graduating and some just reaching school age. If you're going to be "in" for a while, consider a lifetime membership with HSLDA. It's a good deal for families with more than 10 years of homeschooling ahead.
