====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Virginia--Bedford County Drops Social Worker Threat Dear HSLDA Members: Bedford County Public Schools recently sent homeschool families a letter that made inappropriate and nearly irrational demands. Families who had already submitted year-end assessments were told they needed to submit them. Families homeschooling under the religious exemption were told they must submit a notice of intent. Families who had already submitted a notice of intent were told they needed to submit one. Families were told they must submit a phone number and the student's date of birth, although the law does not require families to submit this information. Finally, they were told they would be "turned over to the school Social Workers" if they did not comply. HSLDA Senior Counsel Scott Woodruff called the Supervisor of Student Services, who had authored the letters, and explained that his demands were outside the boundaries of state law. He was very receptive to Woodruff's explanation and acknowledged that the letters were inappropriate. Based on this conversation, homeschool families need not be anxious about the threatening letter if they are in compliance with the law. Most families should feel comfortable just ignoring the letter. If you would like individualized guidance because of your particular situation, we would be very happy to help.
