====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== October 14, 2010 Ohio--Update: H.B. 371 Not Moving Yet Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, We have previously made you aware of House Bill 371, which has been in the Civil and Commercial Law Committee for over 10 months. By way of an update, there has been no action taken since our last update in May. HSLDA continues to monitor the bill in coordination with CHEO and will keep you informed. House Bill 371 is a 565-page bill that would restructure Ohio's current abuse and neglect code and increase state intervention in the parent-child relationship in Ohio. The bill contains language that would essentially "ban" corporal discipline in Ohio and create seven new and vague categories under which social workers could justify taking any action they deem appropriate during social services investigations. We are grateful to each one of you who made the effort to contact lawmakers and ask them to oppose this bill. During this election season we encourage you to make contact with your representatives and candidates to tell them to oppose this legislation. As the election season approaches, we want to remind you about another important effort underway to help support homeschooling freedom in Ohio. Ohioans for Educational Freedom ("OEF") focuses on the importance of the Ohio State Board of Education (OSBE) to homeschoolers by supporting home education-friendly OSBE candidates. As a statewide political action committee, OEF is imploring you to help endorsed candidates running for the State Board of Education. You can identify who is running in your district, here: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=9409 Please take advantage of this important resource by visiting their website and signing up for their email alerts on select candidates: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=9410 . Elections are just around the corner! You have other opportunities to get involved in this election season. HSLDA's Generation Joshua program is putting together a Student Action Team in Ohio to assist a homeschool-friendly U.S. House of Representatives candidate. For more information, and to find out how you can assist this supporter of the Parental Rights Amendment, visit: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=9411 Thank you for your attention to these important matters of freedom and for your ongoing support. Standing with you! Michael P. Donnelly, Esq. Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> How many acorns can a chipmunk hold in its cheeks? We don't know! But we do know that gathering little by little enables ordinary folks to prepare for hard times. That principle is behind HSLDA's payment plan: by paying a month at a time, families can receive an annual HSLDA membership. Meanwhile, they can feel secure as they homeschool and focus on other priorities -- their children. Don't go nuts trying to pay for membership all at once. Choose one of our convenient payment plans.
