====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Wisconsin--Department of Public Instruction Lets Homeschoolers Down Dear HSLDA Members: I recently asked the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to make three changes to bring the DPI form into line with state law, and a fourth for simple convenience. The Department has agreed to one request, and refused the other three. The Department has agreed to accept a mailing address, only. Families wishing to submit PO Box only should not have a problem. Unfortunately, however, the Department has refused to stop asking for the individual grade levels and genders of children, even though these are clearly not required under law. If you fill out your own paper form and identify the number of children enrolled merely by "elementary" or "high school", and say nothing about gender, you have satisfied the law. Use the "ungraded 1-8" or "ungraded 9-12" boxes to limit information to what is truly required. Scratch out the "male" "female" wording on the paper form. The Department has also refused to make the paper form available conveniently. They continue to insist that homeschoolers who prefer a paper form over submitting information online send a written request. Here are two reasons you may not want to use the online "form." It will not function unless you identify your enrolled students by gender--which is not required under law. Also, the form will not function unless you identify a school district, which is not required under law. For your convenience HSLDA has modified last year's DPI form so it can be used this year. If you are an HSLDA member, you may go to the "members only" section of our website, download the modified form, and submit it as usual. The forms are due by October 15, whether submitted by mail or online. If you have already received a paper form from the DPI, please scan and send a copy to us for review. Sincerely, Scott A. Woodruff HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Remember the last time you wrote a term paper?
