====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Rhode Island--All-Hands Call to Action in Chariho Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Despite an excellent turnout from homeschoolers and overwhelming testimony that making homeschoolers fill out locator cards is offensive, wasteful and outside of written policy, the Chariho School Committee refused to take responsibility Tuesday night and punted the entire issue to their attorneys. Their lack of decisive action will not only cost taxpayers more money (the lawyers don't work for free!), but implies that the school committee is indifferent as to how bad the policy or practice might be--as long as it doesn't land them in front of a judge. It's time to step up the pressure on the school committee. ACTION REQUESTED 1. The Chariho School Committee seems to think the towns actually want locator cards from homeschoolers. Please call all the members of your own town council (Richmond, Charleston, Hopkinton--see list below) and ask them to contact the Chariho School Committee and tell them they do NOT want or need locator cards from homeschoolers. Your town council members are up for election this November. If they don't respond to the needs of the people, they should be replaced. 2. Please contact all school committee members (see list below town council) to express your disappointment in how they refused on Tuesday to adopt a written policy clearly forbidding the administration from requiring homeschoolers to fill out locator cards. Ask them to place our requested change to the homeschool policy on the agenda for their next meeting. We don't want any member of the committee to be able to forget about this issue until they have done justice for us. 3. Develop a strategy for what you personally will do if a truant officer comes to your door. For example, for safety's sake, you might first ask to see his driver's license and check the name and photo (other forms of identification can easily be faked), then have him wait outside until you can call the school administration number and positively confirm that he is who he says. Imposters can be dangerous. Once you're satisfied he's not an imposter, you may want to show him your copy the notice of intent you filed and confirm that this is where you reside. But if he asks you any other questions, you may want to say, "Please send me your questions in writing. I will get back to you as soon as my attorney has had time to review them." 4. If the school committee delays or denies your homeschool "approval" for the purported reason that you have not filled out a locator card, this would cross an important threshold. Notify HSLDA immediately if you are a member. CONTACT INFORMATION Charlestown: (Note - terms expire Nov. 2010) Gregory J.
