====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Rhode Island--Be Ready for Chariho Truant Officer Visits Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: One or more Chariho homeschool families have been visited recently by truant officers seeking to "verify information." This is preposterous and an insult. It presumes that homeschool families are liars. But let's be realistic: no one is going to lie to get the "privilege" of being regulated by the Chariho school system! It is also a waste of taxpayer's money. If truant officers have time to waste visiting homeschool families, maybe there are too many truant officers on staff and the town should make some reductions to save some expenses. But until we can get these wasteful, stressful and insulting visits shut down permanently, a suitable approach in most cases would be to simply show the truant officer a copy of your notice of intent and tell him you did not lie when you submitted it. If he asks for any information that is not already on your notice of intent, tell him to put it in writing and mail you a letter. Then you can deal with it when you have time for reflection and HSLDA can review it, if you are a member. We don't want the school system to think that they can send out truant officers out whenever they want and interrogate families during surprise visits. Also remember to come to the school committee meeting tonight at 7 p.m.! A large turnout of homeschool families should convince the school committee to respect our freedom. The school committee may try to argue tonight that homeschool policy is up to the superintendent. This is not true. By law, homeschool policy rests with the school committee alone. It cannot pass the buck to the superintendent. This is an important protection for our freedom, since the school committee is elected and the superintendent is not.
