====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Illinois--High Alert for Southern Illinois Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Four counties in Southern Illinois--Hamilton, Jefferson, Franklin and Williamson--have turned aggressive toward homeschoolers. On August 20, a Franklin County truant officer sent a letter to a Christopher, Illinois, family demanding that the family bring "all records, test scores, materials that are being used to provide home instruction" in for their inspection. She said the family must show that their children's "level of achievement is comparable to that of the child's peers of corresponding age and grade level." The truant officer even showed up unannounced on the family's doorstep and made demands! On August 30, a Hamilton-Jefferson regional school representative called a Mount Vernon family and demanded that they register with the state, allow her to see their curriculum and submit to home visits. She followed up by trying to come to the family's home. If you are a member of HSLDA and an official makes similar demands of you, contact HSLDA immediately; or if they show up at your home, call us while the official is still on your doorstep. Homeschoolers must stay vigilant and united in the face of this threat.
