1. Update: Over 30 States Adopt National Education Standards

Over the past several months, states have been steadily adopting the
national education standards that the National Governor's Association
released, making them eligible for additional federal funds. HSLDA
considers this an alarming trend.

http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=8848

.....................................................................
2. Conference Encourages Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish Homeschoolers

Last month, an international homeschooling conference held in
Telemark, Norway allowed the presidents of three Nordic homeschool
associations to meet for the first time.

.....................................................................
3. Wisconsin: State Corrects Q&A at HSLDA Request

After HSLDA insisted, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction
agreed to change online information that could have prompted spurious
complaints against homeschooling families.

http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=8850

.....................................................................
4. Georgia: Extra Form Unauthorized

As the beginning of the school year approaches, HSLDA members should
be wary of local public school officials asking them to complete and
submit unauthorized forms.

5. Parental Rights: The First Goal Is Within Sight

The Parental Rights Amendment is poised to push past its first hurdle:
Passage in the U.S. House of Representatives early in the next session
of Congress. But to achieve this, the movement needs to double its
public support by Election Day.

6. Home School Foundation: Widows Fund Accepting Applications

Do you know a widow or widower in need? The Home School Foundation's
Widows Fund is now accepting fall applications through October 1. The
Widows Fund enables widows/widowers to continue homeschooling by
helping them with the cost of curriculum and other needs. Recognizing
the unique challenges and often bleak financial circumstances that
widows and widowers face, this fund offers HSLDA membership,
curriculum scholarships, and emergency help so that dedicated
widows/widowers can continue to direct their children's education at
home.
