====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Kentucky--Deadline to File Notice of Private Homeschool Dear HSLDA Members, As many of you know, each private homeschool program in Kentucky is required to notify the superintendent of the local public school district of the students they have enrolled in their homeschool program. This notice should be made within two weeks of the beginning of each school year. Your notice should include each child's name and age as well as your address. While you are not required to use any particular form, the Home School Legal Defense Association has a form that you can use to submit this information to your local school district. You can find this form, and many others, here: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=8847 In Kentucky, private homeschool programs operate under private school law. Anyone operating a private homeschool program is required to keep attendance and scholarship reports. While school officials occasionally try to insist that you must open up your homeschool program for inspection at any time, the "best practice document" makes it clear that local school officials should only investigate homeschool programs in specific situations. According to the best practice document, if you submit your notice within two weeks of the beginning of the school year, you are presumed to be operating a bona-fide private school and are not to be investigated unless there is evidence of a compelling nature that indicates you cannot operate or maintain a bona-fide school. Most school districts in Kentucky begin their school year either in the first or second week in August. If you have not already submitted your notice for this year, we would suggest that you submit it as soon as possible. While you are not required send your notice in any particular way, you might want to send it with delivery confirmation so you have a record of the school district's receipt of your notice.
