====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Missouri: Declaration of Homeschool Intent Not Necessary Dear HSLDA Members: Last Wednesday, the Boone County Journal published an article for the Southern Boone County School District saying: "Families who want to homeschool their children need to provide some information for the local public school district in order to avoid misunderstandings." A list of "needed" information followed. The article then said that if families don't submit the information, "school officials don't know whether the family has moved or is still homeschooling." The article explained that "The home-schooling declarations prevent the school from making erroneous reports of educational neglect." The article seems to say that homeschool families have the burden of proving they are innocent, and implies that it is a family's fault if the school system makes a mistake. This message must be firmly repudiated. We do not have to prove our innocence; it is presumed. And it is the school system's job to prevent its own mistakes--not yours. The article leads us to believe that the school system's only motivation in asking you to file the information is to prevent mistakes. But the real motivation is probably money. The school system gets money for each declaration of enrollment that is filed. You are under no obligation to file a declaration. Sincerely, Scott A. Woodruff HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Extreme makeovers are for extreme circumstances... Most homeschools don't need an extreme makeover, but there is something to be said for attention to detail and recognition of accomplishments. Watch the media and you'll soon see that not everyone wants home educators and homeschooling to look good. HSLDA works hard to shed light on the good work of home educators so it's obvious that we don't need someone "making-over" our homeschools. Join HSLDA and help us show the world that we're fine as we are . . . thank you!
