====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Virginia--Errors in Goochland Letter Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: On June 16 the Goochland County Public Schools Student Services Specialist sent a letter to homeschool families containing errors. Here is some guidance to help you put the letter in perspective. The letter twice referred to the necessity of families getting "approval" in order to homeschool. Families do not need the school system's approval to homeschool. It also said an "education plan" must be filed by August 15. There is no such requirement in the law, although that is the correct date for filing a notice of intent for the coming year. The letter said that information about "home school regulations" can be obtained from the state Department of Education. There are no homeschool regulations, nor does any state agency have authority to adopt regulations. The letter contains an awkwardly worded request asking families to notify the school system if they are no longer homeschooling. The applicable statutes do not require you to tell a school system if you stop homeschooling. If you choose to stop homeschooling, you just stop filing the annual notice of intent. It's as simple as that. You are not required to notify the school system about alternate plans you may have made, or whether your child is no longer subject to compulsory attendance by virtue of having graduated and received a diploma. Let us know if the letter raised any question in your mind that we did not address above. If you operate under the religious exemption, you can disregard this bulletin.
