====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Louisiana: Update--Homeschool Graduate Bill To Be Heard in House Education Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: Senate Bill 798, previously known as SB 517, will be heard in the House Education Committee tomorrow morning at 11:00 am, in House Committee Room 1. We encourage as many as are able to show up in support of this bill. If you are unable to show up tomorrow, please contact the members of the committee and let them know you are in support of this bill. More information on the committee can be found here - http://house.louisiana.gov/H_Cmtes/H_Cmte_ED.asp . HSLDA Legal Assistant Eric Johnson, a Louisiana native, will be present to testify before the committee in support of this bill. As we indicated earlier, the Louisiana Senate Education Committee heard Senate Bill 517, and it passed unanimously. The bill was substituted on the Senate floor by Senate Bill 798. Senate Bill 798 has the same purpose and result of the original bill and contains the identical core language. The Senate then passed it, and it is now on the House side. Due to the hard work of Christian Home Educators Fellowship of Louisiana (CHEF of LA) and others, SB 798 has the support of both the Louisiana Department of Education (LDE) and the governor. However, we still would like you to contact your state representative and urge them to support the bill if you have not already done so. With your help, we can help prevent the discriminatory practice of not recognizing the diploma of home study students in Louisiana. Please contact your state senator with the message below. ACTION SUGGESTED: Please call or email your state representative, as well as several members of the committee, and give them this message in your own words: "Please support Senate Bill 798. This bill will enable home study graduates, who were enrolled in a state-approved program, to receive the same recognition for their diploma and transcripts as other state-approved nonpublic school students. Home study students who complete their program in compliance with state law just want to be treated fairly with other nonpublic school graduates, and this bill has the support of the LDE. Thank you for your support of Senate Bill 798." Calling your state representative is preferred, but if you can't call, please send an email. If you can do both, that would even be better. BACKGROUND As we informed you earlier, the purpose of Senate Bill 798 is to help fix issues that homeschool graduates have encountered regarding their homeschool diploma and transcripts. Recently, some homeschool graduates have faced opposition to their proof of completion of high school when they submitted copies of their homeschool diploma and transcripts. While most colleges are actively pursuing homeschool students, some cosmetology and other trade schools in Louisiana are giving homeschool graduates a hard time. Homeschool graduates seeking civil service positions, such as police officers, sheriff's deputies and firefighters, have also had some difficulties. Senate Bill 798 would simply put into Louisiana law that any diploma awarded by an approved home study program would have the all the rights and privileges as a diploma awarded by a state-approved nonpublic school. If you have not already done so, please contact CHEF of Louisiana if you have experienced difficulties in getting into trade schools or civil service positions with your homeschool diploma and transcripts. If you experienced trouble like this, even after you were enrolled or hired, please contact Beryl Amedee at legislative@chefofla.org with any information you can provide. Thanks for your efforts in protecting homeschool freedom in Louisiana! Sincerely, Thomas J.
