Rhode Island--Chariho Requests Documents by June 25

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:

The Chariho Regional High School principal recently sent a letter to
homeschool families suggesting that they turn in their year-end
"Statement of Assurance and Compliance" form and their notice of
intent for 2010-2011 by June 25, and inviting them to a meeting. But
June 25 is not "set in stone" for the filing of either document.

Many families will prefer to wait until later in the summer to file
their notice of intent for the coming year. They should not feel
pressured to rush to get it done by June 25.

But families following a conventional calendar may find it convenient
to file their "Statement of Assurance and Compliance" by June 25. If
that date is not convenient for you, however, you may want to give the
relevant administrator the courtesy of telling him approximately when
you will be filing it.

In filling out the form, give attention to the blank that calls for a
child's grade. It may be appropriate to enter more than one grade for
a child working on several grade levels, or even to enter "ungraded."

Homeschool families have flexibility in determining a child's grade
level. However, parents should avoid sending inconsistent signals
about a child's grade level during high school since it could
adversely affect scholarship and college admission opportunities.

As for the meeting to which the Chariho Regional High School principal
has invited families on Friday, June 18, your privacy would probably
be best served by not attending. Most of us divulge much more
information during a conversation then we would if thoughtfully
drafting a letter. Using the mail instead to submit documents is a
good strategy to protect your privacy.

Sincerely,

Scott Woodruff
HSLDA Senior Counsel
