Attend EU "Open House Day" at European Embassies Across Washington DC

Dear HSLDA members and friends,

HSLDA has become aware of an educational opportunity that is also a
potential way to assist fellow homeschoolers around the globe.

The European Union in the United States announces its Europe Week
2010, May 9-16th. The European Union Embassies' fourth annual "Open
House Day," designed to "create a better understanding of the European
Union," kicks off this week-long event. You are invited to visit any
of the Embassies of the 27 EU countries tomorrow, Saturday, May 8th,
from 10am to 4pm. Free shuttle buses will drop visitors off at
various Embassies in Northwest DC.

The mayor of Washington DC states that the "Open House Day" will give
visitors a look inside the Embassies and Ambassadors' residences,
"many of which are amongst Washington's most interesting architectural
treasures." According to the EU in the US website, the Open House
"demonstrates the EU's motto of 'unity through diversity' by
showcasing the range and richness of European society."

If you plan to visit the German or Swedish Embassies, HSLDA asks you
to consider advocating on behalf of homeschoolers in these countries.
Current circumstances in both of these nations are such that
homeschoolers face intense pressure and even persecution. Please take
this opportunity to inform diplomatic officials in a polite and
gracious manner that homeschooling works. Explain that their country
should allow this form of education. You and your family are examples
that home-educated children flourish in their studies and graduate to
become productive citizens. The Embassy of Brazil also needs to hear
this message. If you plan to attend the Open House Day, please
consider visiting the Brazilian Embassy, located near the Embassy of

HSLDA encourages you to take advantage of your proximity to
Washington, DC and take part in this unique opportunity to learn about
and engage with foreign cultures.

-> How long are you in for?

Some families are facing what seems like a lifelong commitment to
homeschooling, with children at both ends of the spectrum -- some
graduating and some just reaching school age. If you're going to
be "in" for a while, consider a lifetime membership with HSLDA.
It's a good deal for families with more than 10 years of
homeschooling ahead.
