====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== New York: Rochester--Come to Meeting Tonight About Annual Assessments Dear HSLDA Members and Friends: As many of you know, the Rochester City School District has sent several letters over the past few months limiting the choices parents have to select an administrator for the annual assessment under New York law. While even a parent could, with the consent of the superintendent, administer the alternative written narrative evaluation or a standardized test, if the parent meets the test publishers' qualifications, the Rochester City School District has indicated that that parents will not be permitted to administer the annual assessment. HSLDA Staff Attorney Thomas (Tj) Schmidt, along with several leaders from Loving Education at Home (LEAH) including Charity LEAH and Pittsford Community Church LEAH, will be meeting with the Rochester City School District on Monday afternoon to try and resolve this issue. A few other local homeschool support organizations, like the Rochester Area Homeschool Association, will also be at the meeting. On Monday evening, Tj Schmidt will be present at a special meeting for homeschoolers in the area sponsored by Charity and PCC to discuss this situation and be available for questions about homeschooling in New York. Please pray for the meeting with the Rochester City School District on Monday afternoon. Our goal is that the Rochester City School District would recognize that a parent is not automatically disqualified from administering the annual assessment. We believe that the superintendent should only withhold consent for those who do not meet the test publishers' qualifications or are otherwise not "qualified" to conduct the annual assessment. New York law does not prevent a parent from administering the annual assessment, and HSLDA intends to fight for homeschool parents' ability to do so. You are invited to attend the meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the Pittsford Community Church at 421 Marsh Road, Pittsford, NY. Directions are below.
